Why I became a Functional Medicine Practitioner

“I help my clients discover the root cause of their health issues using not only my biochemistry background but through thorough discovery, specialized tests, and natural supplements.

Azadeh Hi! I’m Azadeh and the owner, Natural Health Practitioner, Registered Homeopath, Certified Iridologist, and Nutritionist here at Heartland Natural Clinic.

For those who have come into Heartland Nutrition House, you may have seen me around the store, as it’s definitely my home away from home!

As we’re starting a new year, I thought this would be a great opportunity to share a bit about who I am and why I am so passionate about helping others discover the root cause of their health issues.

I have always been fascinated with the human body and how it operates. I started my career obtaining my postgraduate degree in biochemistry, but I was still intent on learning more about natural medicine and its effects on the body.

There are so many things in nature that we still don't understand. So many natural medicines have been around for thousands of years, and I am passionate about discovering ways to meld together the power of natural medicine with the advanced technologies used in modern medicine. I truly feel that when working with both worlds, the biggest change is possible.

I wanted to better understand how natural solutions could help others, which led me to study functional medicine and get my degree in homeopathic medicine and holistic nutrition.  And because I believe learning never stops, to deepen my knowledge I am also currently training and obtaining certification in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

There is nothing more gratifying to me than being able to help my clients. Many people who walk through my clinic's doors are at their wit's end, sometimes having spent years trying multiple treatments for their symptoms, often with little or no relief. Frustrated and often exhausted, they come to me looking for guidance, maintaining hope that they can finally get their symptoms under control.

As a functional medicine practitioner, I understand the distress that my clients are in when they are dealing with health issues. Most often, they present with one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Digestive health issues (e.g. acid reflux, gas, bloating, pain, constipation, diarrhea)
  • Stress, anxiety, depression, sleep issues
  • Inflammatory issues (e.g. autoimmune disorders, aches/pain, skin conditions, headaches)
  • Metabolic disorders (e.g. diabetes, cholesterol issues, high blood pressure)

When I first meet with a client, I often put on my ‘Sherlock Holmes’ hat, asking many questions and listening to the feedback, trying to understand each symptom and how it is contributing to their issue. It’s like solving a jigsaw puzzle - each piece fits together and will show me the bigger picture.

Like a puzzle, I believe that our bodies work in a holistic way and are not just a series of independent parts working on their own. So by viewing the body as a whole and then breaking down each part on a cellular and genetic level, I aim to get to the stem of the problem. And by identifying the underlying issue, we can work together to determine an individualized plan using a combination of modalities; all focused on helping you feel better.

I focus on the following modalities as part of your individualized plan:

  • Functional Medicine and Advanced Testing - a model of care that offers a patient-centered approach to chronic disease management. It encompasses thorough discovery and partnering with your MD to fully understand your medical history. It also uses advanced testing (if needed) to help identify the root cause(s) of your illness
  • Homeopathy - a system of natural health care that is based on the principle of ‘like cures like’ that focuses on using your body’s own healing powers and helps address symptoms at all levels
  • Iridology - the science of analyzing the iris of the eye to determine the location and stage/progression of inflammation in various areas of your body
  • Nutrition - personalized, evidence-based diet, lifestyle, and detoxification techniques used to help with various health concerns

But it doesn’t always mean you have to take supplements or herbal medicine to ease health issues. Sometimes, it’s as simple as a lifestyle change, changing the timing of when you eat or switching up what you eat. Other times, several tests might be needed to figure out exactly what is causing the problem.

And that’s the beauty of functional medicine - there is no blanket approach or treatment. Instead of using a disease-based treatment plan, every client and every plan is individualized and targeted based on their symptoms and root issue.

As a natural health practitioner, I don’t believe in band-aid solutions meant just to target individual symptoms. I believe that education is power and for each person that comes through my clinic’s doors, I want to help them understand how all of their symptoms fit together so they know what is happening with their bodies on a holistic level.

I feel blessed and grateful that I get to spend each day helping others.  My main goal is to understand my clients' core issues while sharing more natural, effective options that offer fewer side effects to help with their chronic health concerns.
